What is Community-Based Acupuncture?
While most US acupuncturists treat patients individually on tables in isolated cubicles, Kenkou contains clusters of recliners in a large, quiet and soothing place. At Kenkou, community-style acupuncture is practiced. This means patients may receive treatment in a private room or with others receiving treatment in the same room. This type of set up is more similar to authentic Asian acupuncture practices and provides several benefits for patients. For example, friends and family members are able to be treated together which provides an increased comfort level. Also, the collective energy established in a group setting makes individual treatments more powerful.

What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient type of healing practice within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Thin needles, no thicker than a strand of hair, are inserted into very specific points in the body that lie along 14 major channels or meridians. These major channels maintain the balance of the body’s vital energy, or Qi (pronounced ‘chee’). When the Qi is out of balance, illness occurs. Acupuncture addresses the improper flow of Qi in the body’s energy channels and works to correct the body into a harmonious and balanced Qi state.
Does Acupuncture hurt?
Every person has different sensitivities and treatments differ from person to person. Reactions from acupuncture may include feeling tingling sensations or a slight ache. Most likely, there may not be an interruption to your comfort at all during treatment. It is common and very normal to feel very relaxed during treatment and some patients even fall asleep.
Is Acupuncture safe and sanitary?
While acupuncture is considered a safe homeopathic healing therapy, occasionally there may be light bruising or a small amount of blood discharge where the needle was inserted. This is normal and is not considered unsafe.
In all cases and without exception, Kenkou uses pre-sterilized, pre-packaged, one-time-use needles. All needles are disposed of in a sanitary manner after use. Also, Kenkou licensed Acupuncturists practice safety standards in adherence to universal practice precautions and the OSHA Safety Standards as required by the federal government.
Can children or needle sensitive individuals benefit from this medicine?
Absolutely. We also use non-insertive techniques, which include the use of magnets, as well as Shaku Ju therapy, which uses techniques of balancing the body without needles. Moxibustion and cupping treatments are also available and can achieve optimal results. Please consult us if this type of treatment is of interest to you.
What other types of therapy can be expected in Acupuncture practice?
There are several non-needle based therapies that Kenkou utilizes when individual patient cases present the need. Having multiple therapies to offer for different ailments allows a variety of patients to benefit from an acupuncture practice. These types of people include children and patients with needle phobias. Some of these alternative therapies include Moxibustion and cupping treatments, acupressure and massage therapy. These techniques are also used to regain Qi balance within the human body. Please feel free to contact Kenkou for additional information regarding these practices.
What is Chinese Herbal Medicine?
Included in TMC practice is the use of Chinese herbal medicine. This also ancient practice is the use of herbs commonly taken from plant, leaf, stem, root, seed ext and are used as a stand-alone therapy or a complement to help enhance acupuncture treatments. The herbs are prescribed on a case by case basis and are dispensed in either raw, powered or pill form. Kenkou ensures the herbs prescribed are from reputable companies, fully compliant with FDA and federal regulations.
